Beyond Love and Evil: Based on De Sade's PHILOSOPHY IN THE BEDROOM, this filmed version necessarily removes some of the more cruel and perverse elements of the book, but is really about as accurate as any filmed version of one of the Marquis' works could be. Bleakly comic and perversely sexual, the film is about a sadistic aristocrat for whom the pursuit of depraved sexual pleasure is a way of life. The title comes from a common theme of De Sade's work, that the pursuit of the perverse can lead one beyond good and evil. | |
